An Introduction to Reiki by Sally Richards

Usui Reiki Shiki Ryoho - Natural Healing for Health & Relaxation

If you have ever wondered about Reiki and what it's all about - please read on. Hopefully some, if not all, of your questions will be answered. In this section I will explain what Reiki is and is what it is not, a little of the origins of Reiki, and the many benefits of this gentle, traditional, healing treatment.

So what exactly is Reiki & how can it help?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Natural Healing System for Health, Relaxation, & Well-being.
Reiki originated in Japan -the word REIKI translates as ' Universal life energy' or 'Life force energy' .This is the energy that is in us, around us, and in all living things. Everything is made up of energy in different forms. Reiki is part and parcel of our universe.

Reiki is a very gentle Holistic & Complementary Therapy that balances, relaxes and restores

In these times of added stress and pressure Reiki can provide Support, Healing, and Comfort, & help us to keep moving forward. When we are tired, low, stressed, anxious, or suffering physical or emotional pain. our life energy becomes low, or has areas of weakness and blocks - Reiki can re-dress the balance, assisted and enabled by the practitioner.

It is not the Reiki practitioner's energy .

they are able, once 'attuned' to the energy during Reiki training, to access and direct the Reiki, as a conduit, through their hands and allow it to flow to the client

Reiki is NOT a religion ~

There simply needs to be a desire for the Reiki to work, an open attitude to the healing energy - and an open-minded view of its possibilities. Regardless of theory or personal belief - Reiki is there for everyone, and all we have to do is want it.

Reiki is Healing - but is it able to cure? .

The word healing does not mean curing, or that Reiki will 'cure' disease and illness - as healing is different to curing - however neither does it mean that it won't, or can't. There are lots of remarkable, anecdotal, stories that Reiki has/does cure people. Reiki Practitioners are constantly amazed by the positive results of Reiki in their own lives, and with their clients - on both an emotional and physically level.

Reiki treatment

I like to perceive Reiki as a wonderful gift

It can support us in many ways, not just physically. Its holistic, autonomous nature has its own inherent wisdom. It can help to reduce symptoms and pain, support the immune system, detoxify the body and speed up the healing time of wounds and fractures etc. Reiki calms the mind - thus assisting us to cope better, bringing us back into balance when life is too hectic or stressful!

Receiving Reiki during a treatment enables the recipient/client to become very deeply relaxed (studies confirm this). While in this relaxed state the Reiki flows and the body is able to heal, or begin to heal (if the first treatment), more effectively.

Reiki works on all levels of being:

Physical, Mental, Emotional & Spiritual.

Reiki is truly holistic - treating the whole person rather than just the specific symptom, making it ideally suitable for emotional and stress-related conditions. This is why Reiki can have such a transformative effect on people's lives, enabling them to take more control and move forward. It can help with difficult decision making - aiding focus and building confidence.

Reiki gives us what we need most ~ going to the area of need: Healing, soothing & comforting.

Reiki is a very rapidly growing holistic therapy and is now used in hospitals, hospices, care homes and beauty clinics, as well as in the work place (for relaxation and to de-stress) and many other environments. There is evidence that Reiki is particularly helpful for post-operative healing; Reiki is known to speed up the healing time of wounds and aid recuperation. Patients also report less pain.

Reiki Origins

Mikao Reiki
Reiki is believed to be very, very, ancient.

It was 're-discovered' in the late 19th century by Dr. Mikao Usui, in Japan, and brought to the west by Hawayo Takata in the late 1940's.

Dr. Usui, a highly educated, spiritual man and philosopher, found evidence for the healing system in ancient Sanskrit texts and made it his life work, through years of study, research, personal development and meditation, to find the practical application for the system. He spent the rest of his life dedicated to Reiki healing, and teaching Reiki.

Today Usui Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.

Reiki Masters can trace their lineage directly back to Mikao Usui & can provide evidence of this.

What is a Reiki treatment like?

How often do we actually stop completely?
'Not very often' is the answer for most of us!

Sometimes we even keep extra busy in order that we can't stop to think, to feel, to remember or to worry. Suppressed thoughts and feelings are however still working away creating in-balance and sometimes leading to ill health.

Reiki induces such deep relaxation - it gives us a real, and much needed, break!
A reiki treatment is a time of relaxation, rest, peace and nurturing .

After and initial chat, and discussion about the treatment etc, the client lies down on the couch ( or sits in a *chair) - in cooler weather a light blanket covers the legs and torso. I like to use relaxing music and candles for atmosphere and to relax the client - this is totally optional. The Reiki Practitioner places their hands lightly on the client in a discreet, sequence of positions, held for 3-5mins each, starting with the head. There is no pressure or manipulation involved. Taking from 1 hour to 1½ hours for a full treatment.

*Reiki can be received while lying down or seated Seated Reiki treatments are often shorter and ideal for top-ups, or for times, such as with back pain, when lying down is uncomfortable. There is no need for the removal of any garments for a Reiki treatment as Reiki energy can pass through - it can even pass through plaster casts and assist, and speed up, the healing of broken bones, once set correctly!

Reiki benefits

following a treatment can be dramatic but are often subtle

It's only when I ask a client some weeks, or even months, later questions such as " how is the pain in your arm/back?" they pause, think, . and respond with "oh, well, actually it has been fine!". They may not connect the two things: having Reiki and the symptom improving! That is simply because -

We often only notice things when they are a problem - not when they improve or disappear!

One of my clients came for a course of Reiki for back pain - shortly after the treatments they made some major changes in life, which had been holding them back for quite a while. Reiki can support us on many levels and often when, and how, we least expect it! Reiki can ease transition and lead us on the path that is right for us.

Who can benefit from Reiki?

Reiki is safe for all - from the very young to the very old, and for our pets!

Reiki can be used for relaxation, de-stressing, & balancing and/or to treat a very wide range of conditions . It also rids the body of toxins and supports the immune system. It's healing effect compliments other treatments, both orthodox and complementary.

Reiki is being used in various settings including private practice,
complementary therapy centres, GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices,
cancer support groups, post-operative recovery,
drug rehabilitation, prisons, HIV/AIDS centres,
and in the care of the elderly.

Alfie enjoying some ReikiIt has very few contra-indications because it is so safe and gentle (*your practitioner can discuss this with you*). Young children can safely receive Reiki but must have parental supervision during treatments. Older children need written parental permission. Reiki is very safe -but it's always advisable to talk to/check with your GP/consultant before having any form of complementary therapy, so that progress can be monitored.

Reiki is a complimentary treatment. Reiki professionals (as with other holistic therapies) should/will always advise clients to have discussions with their GP/Consultant when they come for treatment for a medical condition/symptoms etc. So that medications and progress can be monitored.
